Hello & Welcome To Our Family

Channings Childcare…… more than 34 years old and still counting.

Channings childcare is a family of 5 nurseries situated across Oldham and Rochdale. Please come and take a look around our website. You’ll find us in Newhey, Royton, Werneth, Chadderton and Rochdale.

Our Story…

Today Channings has 5 nurseries and employs over 100 members of staff. During those years, more than 5000 children have drunk their morning milk at Channings. We are celebrating over 30 years of Channings Childcare.

1989

Channings Childcare began when Catherine Hoggard converted the old Newhey Conservative Club into Channings Early Years School; her dream was to provide early years education for local youngsters. Catherine, then an English teacher at North Chadderton School, worked long into the night and at weekends to single handedly paint and furnish the 5000 sq foot building.

1989

On Monday 12th September 1989, six little 3 year old children sat around the ‘green table’ drinking their morning milk and chatting to Miss Sharon. That was the start of Channings Childcare.

1997

After the birth of her daughter, Catherine opened our second nursery in Royton, a town with significant family history. Her mother served as the Head Teacher at Thorp Primary School, and her grandparents had connections to the local cotton mills.

1999

This year saw the opening of our third nursery, Werneth. The building was used to house the horses and servants for the Lees family of Oldham. A lot of the original features of the building remain.

2015

Channings converted what was once a Gospel Mission in Oldham to open our fourth nursery Chadderton Way. This nursery welcomes children from the local community as well as from further afield.

2016

The next addition to the Channings family, Channings Rochdale, was our first town centre nursery. Rochdale opened in February and was transformed from the old workhouse building with it’s plaque ‘The institute for the destitute’.

2019

Now grown up, Catherine’s daughter Kate joined the company as a nursery manager. Kate left her career as a teacher to join her mum and begin learning the ropes.

2020

The most recent addition to our family opened on Kingsway, Rochdale in November 2020. Kingsway was a building that Catherine had had her eye on for years and years so when it became available she jumped at the chance to snap it up.

2023

One of our most significant changes this year was Catherine’s retirement in September, allowing her to spend more time with her grandson. After years of observing her mum’s work and gaining valuable experience, Kate has now taken on the responsibility of running the company.

Our Philosophy

We believe the success behind Channings Childcare extends beyond providing exceptional care and learning. We also value the understanding of parents’ emotions and hold their children in the same high regard.

These are your precious children, and we will care for them in a way that aligns with your wishes. We aim to create a warm, nurturing, enjoyable, and secure environment that bridges the gap between a child’s day at home. We understand the feelings of parents when they entrust their children to us; many of our staff members are parents themselves. Our focus is on each unique child, striving to provide care that closely mirrors the care parents provide, guiding children through those crucial early years until they are ready to transition to school.

We also place a strong emphasis on nurturing social skills, fostering independence, and establishing connections with local primary schools to ensure a smooth and seamless transition when the time comes.

While our nurseries operate under the same principles, they each have their own distinct character and personality. They are designed to cater to diverse families with varying needs. We hope that parents and children treasure their time with Channings, and it’s heartening to see many parents maintain connections with us, sharing nothing but positive feedback about their experiences.

Our Aims

At Channings, we individualise our teaching methods and curriculum to cater to each child’s unique strengths and interests, ensuring that every child can reach their full potential. We recognise that each child develops in their own preferred way of learning.

Each nursery creates a secure, nurturing, and stimulating atmosphere that fosters a child’s development by prioritising safety, warmth, and engaging activities to ignite their curiosity and growth.

We foster a dynamic learning environment where children acquire knowledge, skills, essential concepts, and positive attitudes through engaging and interactive experiences, making the educational journey both rewarding and exciting for each child.

Our nurseries employ effective teaching methods and resources to ensure that children develop proficiency in both language and numeracy, equipping them with essential communication and mathematical skills for their academic journey and beyond.

Our staff team prioritises the development of personal and social skills in children through activities that encourage teamwork, empathy, and emotional intelligence, enabling them to build positive relationships and navigate the social aspects of their lives with confidence.

All our nurseries actively instil in children an awareness of moral, social, and cultural values, helping them appreciate diversity, respect others, and make ethical choices in their interactions with the world around them.
