Hello & Welcome to Channings Childcare Nurseries
Channings childcare is a family of 6 nurseries situated across Oldham and Rochdale. Please come and take a look around our website. They are in Newhey, Royton, Werneth, Chadderton and two in Rochdale.
Channings Childcare…… more than 30 years old and still counting
On Monday 12th September 1989, six little 3 year old children sat around the ‘green table’ drinking their morning milk and chatting to Miss Sharon. That was the start of Channings Childcare. Today Channings has 6 nurseries and employs over 100 members of staff. During those years, more than 3,500 children have drunk their morning milk at Channings. We are celebrating over 30 years of Channings Childcare.
We must be doing something right !!
Oldham Business Awards
The Channings team celebrated winning the Supporting Young People category of the Oldham Business Awards. This award is highly significant to Channings Childcare, who are highly committed to the development of young staff members. It was a fantastic achievement and we’re very proud indeed.
In The Beginning
Channings Childcare began when Catherine Hoggard converted the old Newhey Conservative Club into Channings Early Years School; her dream was to provide early years education for local youngsters. Catherine, then an English teacher at North Chadderton School, worked long into the night and at weekends to paint and furnish the 5000 sq foot building. The green table was the family dining table cut down and painted.
The second nursery, opened in 1997 in Royton, Oldham (Catherine’s home town) where her mother was Head Teacher at Thorp Primary School.
This was followed by a nursery in Werneth, Oldham in 1999.
Catherine celebrated 25 years of Channings Childcare back in September 2014 with Channings friends and staff, past and present at the Bellavista in Milnrow. We are now proud to be over 30 years old.
Newer Nurseries
In 2015 Channings converted a Gospel Mission on Maygate, off Chadderton Way, Oldham. This nursery welcomes children from the local community as well as from further afield. Parents from the Royal Oldham Hospital appreciate the early opening to fit in with their working hours.
The next addition to the Channings family, Channings Rochdale, was our first town centre nursery. Rochdale opened in February 2016 and was transformed from the old workhouse building with it’s plaque ‘The institute for the destitute’!
The most recent addition to our family opened on Kingsway, Rochdale in November 2020.
We fully back the government’s enthusiasm for providing free childcare places for two year old children. Grants are welcomed for 2, 3 and 4 year old children at all of our nurseries.
The Owner’s Philosophy
Catherine believes the success behind Channings Childcare isn’t just about offering excellent care and learning, it’s about understanding how parents feel and cherishing their children as much as they do.
Our ethos is – they are your children and we’ll look after them in the way you wish. We are the warm, caring, fun and safe environment that bridges the gap between a child’s day that begins and ends at home. We understand how it feels for mums and dads to be leaving their child with us. It’s about each individual child and it’s about providing care as close to what mum and dad offer and leading children through those vital early years up to the point of their leaving us, prepared to start school.
We also put great emphasis on developing social skills, independence and links with local primary schools to ensure a pleasant and trouble-free transition.
“Our nurseries are all run in the same way but they are all very different,” said Catherine. “They cater for different kinds of families with different needs. We hope that parents and children cherish their time with Channings and consequently many parents stay in touch and have nothing but good things to say about their experiences.”
One mum recently commented on our Facebook page saying: “It’s been eight years since we left, but we still hold fond memories of their time with you and we are still in touch with a number of families we met at nursery; what a fantastic start you gave them.”
