Channings Nursery in Werneth, Oldham
Diet & Health Eating
At the Oldham nursery we cater for a wide range of dietary requirements including Halal, vegetarian, dairy free and Gluten free. We buy Halal meat from a local butcher and the children grow some of our own fruit and vegetables in the nursery garden.
We work with Oldham NHS on the Brush Together, Smile Together initiative. Staff visit us with free toothbrushes, tooth paste, cleaning charts and information leaflets.
This runs alongside our Healthy Eating Award, where we ensure that our children have ample fresh fruit and vegetables every day.
Sensory Garden
At the Oldham nursery the staff and children have recently built a sensory garden. Parents have also been wonderful, donating plants, pots, tools … and messages of support! In the herb garden we grow several herbs and fruit such as grapes, strawberries and blackcurrants. In the vegetable we have potatoes, cabbages, mushrooms and magic carrots.
Whilst this is great messy fun, it is a perfect opportunity for the children to learn through play. They are developing the senses of sight, touch, smell and taste. They also see first hand where their food comes from and to become adventurous with food.
Continuing our nature theme, we encourage our children to interact with animals and insects. In our garden we have bird houses, an insect house and a bat house.
Child Development
Inline with the statutory framework and guidance, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. Parents are encouraged to get involved and exchange information with us, which helps in the development of the children in so many ways.
Our Nursery Staff
We have a very well balanced team of carers in our nursery and ongoing training and development is considered a high priority. Ofsted recommends that staff undertake at least four days training per year. Our nursery exceeds this and our room leaders, supervisors and manager welcome all opportunities for professional development.
Oldham Authority – Strong Links
Our Oldham nursery has been strongly supported by Oldham Early Years and we have strong partnerships with several local schools and with Sure Start. We attend cluster groups, exchange good practice and co-operate on many projects.
