Channings Nursery in Royton

The Channings Nursery in Royton is a charming, prestigious Victorian residence, set in its own grounds. Prior to its conversion to a Channings Nursery, Prospect House  was a family home, but was more famously known as one of Royton’s Scattered Homes. Parents often remark on the cosy, homely and carling feel of the nursery. This is particularly so in our baby room. We are sometimes visited by people who lived here when it was a childrens’ home and they tell us that Prospect House was a friendly place even then.

In the grounds we have established separate outdoor play areas for each of the three age groups. We have wooden decking immediately outside the rooms, leading on to the play areas, where we have installed the very child friendly ‘No Mow Grass’ surfaces.

Immediately beyond the secure play areas is the local park. We take the children for frequent walks to play in the park and also to see the horses in a field close by.

Child Development

At the Royton Nursery we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance for early stage development and this nursery has a particularly strong reputation for its baby care.

We strongly encourage parents to participate in their child’s development and to contribute to our childcare policies and their implementation.

Interactive Child Development

We are fortunate in that our Royton Nursery is located in easy walking distance form the shops. The children are intrigued to see the gold, silver and diamonds in the jeweller’s window and in the supermarket they love to go ‘hands on’ picking and weighing the vegetables and other groceries. In the travel agents they do role plays and collect posters of nice locations for holidays. In the nursery they make letters to each other and then post them at the post office.

We encourage early interest in books and the children enjoy our visits to the library, where a member of the library staff will read stories to our Pre School group.

Continuing our theme of interactivity, we have visits from the local fire brigade and police force. The fire brigade are very popular, the children are fascinated when they turn up - in the fire engine…!! But amongst the fun, there is also a strong developmental purpose to these visits; The fire brigade show the children how the fire fighting apparatus works and communicate the dangers of matches and playing with fire. The police talk gently to them about issues such as taking sweets from strangers and talking to people they don’t know.

Our Nursery Staff

Our Royton nursery has a very stable and experienced child care staff. Four of our nursery staff have received awards for long service in child care for 0 – 5 years olds.
The children benefit from this stability, as it allows our keyworkers to move with the child to the next care room until the child is comfortable with the transition.

As with all of the Channings Nurseries, great emphasis is placed on staff training and development. At the Royton Nursery we have three staff members studying for the Early Years Childcare Foundation degree at Oldham college.
