Extension built at Channings Childcare Royton
August 2010
We are currently in the process of having a two storey side extension built at Channings Childcare Royton. An extension and subsequent re-organisation of our existing space will give children some much needed play space, and improve our facilities.
Incorporated within the extension will be a second staircase and rear entrance hall which will allow the pre-school children direct access to our improved playground without needing to walk through the under 2 unit. The garden will be able to be ‘open’ all day and children will be able to choose to stay outdoors for longer. A new toilet, specifically for children who are playing outdoors, will mean that they do not even have to come back upstairs for this reason.
At first floor level the children’s play space will be extended and the bathroom will be made larger we will also install a hydraulic changing bed.
On the ground floor, three rooms and hallway will become one open unit. For years we have tried, unsuccessfully, to work out how to arrange these three rooms so that children are not constantly moving rooms. The open, large unit will operate as a tweenie/toddler unit. We will be able to leave out more activities as continuous provision, giving our younger children a wider range of activities which are available for a longer time. The new room will have a door giving direct access to the garden and two French windows giving access to two separate decking areas.
There will be a separate room for babies which will be extended to give them more space. This room links to the rear entrance hall and outside so that babies can be taken into the garden. A Juliet window will bring a little of the outside into the room.
A new bathroom will be shared by both these age groups. A larger, and better organised room, will give us more baby changing areas and room to help children who are potty training.
A larger office will be created next to the front door and a new disabled toilet will be created.
The proposed new office will allow parents, and visiting professionals, a room where they can comfortably, and privately, liaise with the nursery staff.
All building works will be completed to current building regulations and which adhere to all DDA requirements. The new rear entrance and the opening out of the ground floor will give total wheelchair access to this floor. A new disabled toilet is also planned for this floor.
We expect work to be completed by March 2011Easydentic
We are delighted to announce that we have now had Easydentic Fingerprint Door Entry Systems Fitted on all three of our nurseries. Fingerprint identification is the most secure form of access control and only Staff / Parents registered to use this system by the touch of their finger will be able to gain access.
Anyone who is not registered on our system will have to ring the bell and wait to be admitted. The door will only open if a match of a unique fingerprint detail is found on the computer.
This system, unlike a pin or card cannot be obtained from or given to another person, therefore it is important that each person to use the door registers their entry. This will ensure that all children are counted on arrival and departure, and we would ask that parents do not hold the door open for each other as this will not register your child in nursery.
This system will eventually become our main record of children and staff who are in the building and it is vital that each child is registered, even if you are collecting your child from the playground. We cannot stress the importance of using the system to register admission into the building.
Fingerprints are stored using a mathematical system, rather than a readable image, ensuring individual privacy is protected at all times.
For any new children who attend nursery it will be a condition of our admission procedure that their parents/guardians/grandparents (or anyone else who picks up a child regularly) will have their thumb print registered.
Newhey News
The children in the preschool class worked hard towards producing a Nativity play which was to be held as part of our Christmas Celebrations, however because of the bad weather the week before Christmas we actually ended up doing it twice!
The children also went to visit Newhey Manor to sing Christmas Carols to the elderly people who live there.
SureStart are continuing to hold weekly Rhythm and Rhyme sessions in nursery for our children this is designed to introduce children under the age of five to the joys of music-making and develop their skills and abilities through musical activity. The children really enjoy these sessions and look forward to the visit by Andrea.
You've never seen a nursery like this before-The nursery has recently taken delivery of a wormery!
Baby earthworms will hatch from real earthworm cocoons, the children will then be able to watch them dig and grow in the special multi-chambered greenhouse habitat. When they have grown we will release them safely into the field to continue their lifecycle.
We have now developed sensory areas throughout the nursery-
The areas are used by small groups of children and offer
a relaxing and calm environment where children can interact, control and explore through different experiences that stimulate the senses.
The younger children who are just in the process of becoming toilet trained are given a reward chart with stickers that enable them to record successful trips to the bathroom.
For the 4th year running we have received our Golden Grin (GOLD) award. This shows an ongoing commitment to healthy eating and oral health.
