Our Ethos at Ashfield Nursery, South Shields & Gateshead
At Ashfield Nursery & Early Learning Centre our multi-skilled team provide a nurturing environment for your children. We apply the High Scope Philosophy, encouraging the children to become early active learners and create their own independence. We know that children learn best through active learning and play; we want the children in our nursery to learn at a pace that they are comfortable and confident with. We encourage them to actively pursue their own individual interests and this allows them to experience feelings of control, competence and success. We have found that this approach enables us to bring the quieter children ‘out of their shell.’
The children are encouraged to sit down with staff and plan out the day’s activities and at the close of the day they participate in a review of how the activities went, what they most enjoyed etc, both individually and as a group. The children learn to develop co-operative relationships and compromise with both their peers and staff at the nursery by expressing themselves and listening to others.
Ashfield Nursery- Babies & Tots - 6 weeks to 2 years.
This room within our nursery provides stimulating activities and materials to stimulate the children and help to them to develop. All babies’ routines will be followed to the parent’s request.
Ashfield Nursery- 2-3 years.
Enjoyable activities ensure much stimulation and fun for the children. The activities change on a daily basis and are recorded on the playroom planning board for parents to observe. The children are developing their social skills at this stage and so we encourage this interaction with each other through play and activities in small groups.
Ashfield Nursery- 3-5 years.
The wide choice of stimulating activities in this room allows the children to show their preferences and abilities whilst growing in independence. A range of activities and materials are available throughout the day. Planning and learning is based on the child’s choice.

Nutritious, tasty balanced menus are devised with the assistance of a dietician from the South Tyneside Hospital. Special dietary requirements are also catered for so you can rest assured that your child is eating the excellent wholesome food prepared on site.
